How To Use AI(ChatGPT) For Self Tutoring and Learning Faster.

University life has a funny way of humbling you.

One day you feel like the smartest person in the room. The next day you open a lecture slide and suddenly it looks like the lecturer switched from English to ancient alien language.

I’ve been there.

Sometimes the lecturer moves too fast. Sometimes the textbook explains things in a way that feels like it was written for robots. And sometimes you just want someone to explain something again… but slower.

That’s where AI tools like ChatGPT come in.

Now before we continue, let me say something important.

I’m not writing this as an AI expert. I’m writing this as a student who discovered that AI can be used as a personal tutor that doesn’t get tired of your questions.

You can ask it the same thing 10 times, and it will still answer without saying, “Didn’t we just talk about this?”

Let’s look at how students can actually use ChatGPT to learn faster and understand better.

1. Use ChatGPT to Simplify Difficult Concepts

Sometimes the problem is not that a topic is impossible.

It’s just explained badly.

Instead of searching endlessly through Google, you can ask ChatGPT something like

Explain priority inversion like I am a first-year computer science student.

Or even better

Explain this like I am a 12-year-old.

Suddenly a complex topic becomes something understandable.

For example, a concept in real-time systems like priority inversion can be explained in a simple story about three workers waiting to use one tool.

And suddenly… it makes sense.

If the explanation still feels complicated, just ask

Explain it again with an example.

Trust me ChatGPT doesn’t get offended.

Using ChatGPT like a personal tutor.

2. Turn ChatGPT into Your Study Partner

Studying alone can sometimes feel like talking to a wall.

But ChatGPT can simulate a study partner.

You can say

Ask me 10 quiz questions about SQL joins.

or

Test me on Python loops like an exam.

This is surprisingly powerful because you are actively recalling information, which is one of the best ways to learn.

Psychologists call this active recall, and it helps memory stick much longer.

The cool part?

If you get a question wrong, you can ask

Why is my answer wrong?

And the AI will explain.

No judgment. No awkward silence.

3. Use ChatGPT to Break Down Study Plans

Another problem students face is not knowing where to start.

Sometimes you open your notes and everything looks like a mountain.

You can ask ChatGPT something like

Create a 7-day study plan to learn the basics of databases.

Or

Explain what topics I should learn first before learning machine learning.

This helps you organize learning into small steps instead of overwhelming blocks.

Because let’s be honest.

Most students don’t fail because they are not smart.

They fail because they don't know how to structure their learning.

AI can help organize a learning plan step-by-step.

4. Ask ChatGPT to Explain Your Lecture Notes

This is one of my favorite tricks.

Copy part of your lecture notes and ask

Explain this paragraph in simpler terms.

Or

Summarize this into 5 key points.

Suddenly a page of confusing text becomes something manageable.

You can even ask

Give a real-world example.

This makes theoretical concepts feel more practical.

5. Use ChatGPT to Practice Coding or Problem Solving

If you're studying programming, ChatGPT becomes extremely useful.

You can ask things like

Give me a beginner C programming exercise.

Or

Explain why my Python code is not working.

Instead of staring at your screen for 40 minutes wondering why your code refuses to cooperate, you get immediate guidance.

Just remember something important

Don’t just copy answers.

Ask for explanations so you actually understand the logic.

Otherwise your brain will just become a copy-paste machine.

Using AI to debug and understand code.

6. Use ChatGPT to Learn Faster (But Not Lazier)

AI is powerful, but it can also become a trap.

If you use it only to generate answers for assignments, you might pass the assignment…

…but fail the exam.

The real advantage of AI is not doing work for you.

It’s helping you understand faster.

Think of it like a tutor who is available 24 hours a day, which is honestly something most students wish existed.

If you want to explore more about AI learning tools, these resources are helpful

  • OpenAI the creators of ChatGPT

  • Khan Academy is a free learning platform with structured courses

These platforms can help you combine AI tutoring with structured learning.

When used correctly, AI tools like ChatGPT can become one of the most powerful study tools students have ever had.

It can

  1. explain confusing concepts

  2. quiz you

  3. summarize notes

  4. help plan your studies

  5. guide you through difficult problems

But the real magic happens when you stay curious.

Ask questions.
Ask follow-ups.
Ask “why” until things make sense.

Because learning is not about memorizing information.

It’s about understanding the world a little better every day.
